MILLAGE INCREASE FOR FIRE DEPARTMENT

OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE

Shall the constitutional limitation on the total amount of taxes which may be levied on all taxable real and personal property in the Charter Township of Chesterfield be increased by two (2.00) mills for each one ($1.00) dollar ($2.00 for each $1,000.00) of the taxable value of such property, as finally equalized, pursuant to 33 PA 1951, as amended, for a period of six (6) years (2008 through 2013 inclusive) for the purpose of providing funds for the operation and maintenance of the township fire department?

The proposed millage represents an increase of one-half (0.50) of one (1.00) mill of a previously authorized one and one-half (1.50) mills through 2013 for a total rate of two (2.00) mills.

The estimated revenue to be collected in the first year that the millage increase of one-half (0.50) of one (1.00) mill is authorized and levied is $920,223.52.

The Chesterfield Fire Department currently operates on a millage of 1.5 that was renewed in 1993.

In 1993, the Chesterfield Fire Department protected 27,000 residents and 1,200 businesses with 2 unstaffed fire stations and 43 paid-on-call fire fighters.

Today, the Chesterfield Fire Department protects 44,800 residents and 2,500+ businesses with 3 staffed fire stations, 19 full-time fire fighters and 12 paid-on-call fire fighters.

In 1993, the Chesterfield Fire Department responded to 731 calls and is projected to exceed 3,000 in 2008. Adequate staffing is critical to the safety of residents and fire fighters.

A millage increase is necessary for the safe operation of the Chesterfield Township Fire Department and to maintain the level of services currently provided to citizens and the community.

A FIRE MILLAGE Is Essential to Maintain Critical Public Safety Services!
